Can’t Travel Activity #1: Start a Garden

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”

Garden 3
It feels pretty good once it’s done.

If you have the means and the time (well…most of us have the time now) you can start a garden! It need not be a big garden or even a vegetable garden, but anything that incorporates the therapeutic qualities of plants. As the American Horticultural Therapy Association writes: “A therapeutic garden is a plant-dominated environment purposefully designed to facilitate interaction with the healing elements of nature.” Here’s the link to read more: https://www.ahta.org/about-therapeutic-gardens

We hand-dug ours using the “double-dig” method and it appears to have produced a well-cultivated garden. It was also great to get out of the house and work together. Scout even got involved (mostly by placing the ball right where I was digging). Plus, it was just plain fun!

Seeds are on the way in the mail and we’ve begun some seedlings indoors. We’ll have some pictures of our progress later. We’re also looking forward to some tasty veggies come fall!

So, even if it’s just a plant in a pot, get out there and start your garden!
